As the County Seat of Union County, it is also the largest city. Monroe has experienced explosive growth because of US-74 which goes to Charlotte. With a population of 26,228 people the main road, US-74 is a traffic nightmare. Many holiday seasons people flock onto US-74 becasue it is a main road to the beach.
